Fort Myers was originally a military fort. Soldiers stationed at the fort began settlement there, and by 1882 the population got sufficiently greater with more settlers coming in. With the building of the Tamiami Trail Bridge which traverses the Caloosahatchee River in 1924 Fort Myers encountered an increase in population. Today Fort Myers has a population of about 68,472. It has an average high temperature of 84.3 degrees Celsius and an average low of 64.4 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are usually around the low 90s in the summer. The city of Fort Myers has a rich history, access to beautiful beaches with gulf access, a variety of real estate properties, and plenty to do.

When Florida became a US Territory in 1821 Fort Myers was one of the first headquarters constructed during the Seminole Indian Wars. Some of the remains of the fort were used to build some of the first buildings in what is now downtown Fort Myers. The original town was platted in 1876 and had about ten families. By 1885 the population grew to about 349, and that same year Thomas Edison took an interest in the area. He eventually purchased a winter estate in the area and built a laboratory on the estate. Edison was friends with Henry Ford and encouraged in his dream of building a gasoline powered automobile. Ford also took an interest in Fort Myers and purchased a winter estate right next to Edison’s. Today, both estates are now historical sites, known as ‘Seminole Lodge’ and ‘The Mangoes,’ that attract many visitors. With two hurricanes in 1921 and 1926, along with the great depression Fort Myers’ growth and development subsided, but after World War II there has been nothing but. In addition the downtown and historic districts of the City of Fort Myers have kept most of their charm.

With white sands, family-friendly resorts, and Gulfside seafood restaurants Fort Myers beach is a treasure to be discovered. Also, living in Fort Myers means less than an hour access to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, which are well known as some of the best beaches in the state of Florida. The Sanibel Lighthouse is one of the major attractions. Some fun ways to be lively at the beaches include cycling, paddle boarding, kayaking, shelling, and volleyball. Bonita Beach is the one off-leash dog beach in the county, and is also a great for shelling. Other Beaches include Boca Grande Beach on Gasparilla Island which includes access to five beaches lining the Gulf of Mexico.

One major advantage of being a Fort Myers resident is, not having to pay state income taxes. There is an array of properties to select from in The City of Fort Myers, Florida. Some of these properties include high rise condos, upscale gated communities, to lower priced single family homes, and impressive waterfront homes. Construction has been increasing in Fort Myers, mainly along the Caloosahatchee River, due to an increase in need for properties. Some property needs include commercial, new residences, community facilities, shopping malls, and more people buying homes or lots as investments.
